Worth the wait! (5/5) Aug 25, 2007 Andrew Townsend Cranford NJ US
This is my first GPS. I bought it as a backup to map and compass for on and off-trail navigation. The construction quality is great. Satellite lock-on is quick; I haven’t been in any deep canyons or deep undergrowth yet – but the unit does stay locked on in my house! The best accuracy the unit has indicated is 6 feet. The manual is fairly basic, I recommend reading about map datums elsewhere for example. Garmin’s website has more in-depth information and there are plenty of other web/book sources for information. Default for the unit is WAAS off. It has to be turned on in the settings page. It would be nice to be able to specify start-up page – for example once turned on it takes a couple of button presses to get to the “location” page. Highly recommended.

This is my third GPS. My first GPS, a Magellan GPS Tracker, still works ok but is about 4 times the size of the eTrex H and very slow to lock. My second GPS was a Garmin Geko 201. It worked fine but the case fell apart. Hopefully my eTrex H won't do that. I am very impressed with the higher sensitivity of my new GPS. I can put it inside my car propped up inside the instrument cluster and it retains lock. The other 2 units only worked if laying on my dashboard. On a "warm start" the eTrex H is up and locked in a few seconds. Many times I had to wait in my car for over a minute before I could get lock. Now I just turn it on and go. All of the cables I have from my Geko work on the eTrex H (this was a basic requirement of mine). I have a Delorme moving map display on my Palm Pilot Zire 72 PDA and am able to use a power/Bluetooth cable to interface with the GPS. I therefore have no need for maps on the GPS. I also like that the eTrex H uses AA batteries. The Geko uses AAA and do not last more than 5 hours. The claim is that the eTrex H will run up to 17 hours. I'm still on my first set of batteries after a week of playing and still have about 80% left. I may be a long time user of GPS but still am happy with this "entry level" unit. My favorite use: traveling to other countries and not getting lost!

My winter passion is ice fishing and hunting. I am constantly in the woods or out on the frozen lakes.
I have had other GPS units and with their spotty performance, never got comfortable trusting them. I ended up using a compass many times when I had a Magellan that I wish I never had owned. Getting out of the woods in the dark or off a 30 below frozen lake in a white out is serious buisness in MN.
Pin pointing my favorite fishing spots and hunting stands that may be miles back in the woods is also a priority for me.
( There is still an expensive portable stand in a tree somewhere south of Waroad, MN. You can have it if you find it. The Magellan unit I was using failed completely and never worked again. All of my waypoints including the stand position were lost.)
I bought the E-Trex on a salesmans recommendation that it will handle the sub zero cold and that it is rugged and reliable. My E-trex is everything he said and more. It works as well at 20 degrees below zero as it does at 70 degrees above. Very detailed, quick and precise. Great backlighting and the features are all there and easy to use once you get accustomed to this unit. The E-Trex is very efficient, accurate and compact. I like the small size and the 1 hand opertaion. The buttons do not stiffen up in the cold.
I have yet to try and connect it to a PC. I would expect no less that good results here either.
I always carry a compass for safety reasons, but have yet to take it out of my pocket in the 2 years of owning this Garmin E-Trex. I do not have a single complaint and feel totally comfortable with the reliability of this unit.
