I just received the Garmin eTrex Legend HCX via FedEx earlier today. It seems to be a great unit. I have been using the original eTrex Legend B/W unit for several years. What great changes have been made. The first thing I noticed was that the color display is very crisp and sharp and very easy to view even in the bright sunlight. The next thing I noticed is how quickly the satellites were aquired. It only takes a moment and you are up and running. The last thing that really impressed me was the new more sensitive receiver. I am able to keep locked on even inside the house and in a vehicle. With the old original Legend it had to be placed at the very furtherest out point of the dash to keep locked in. At this point the only thing I noticed was that the Legend HCX always went back to WAAS Off status after it was shut down. That was the only thing I didn't like but maybe a firmware upgrade in the future could take care of that issue. All in all I am very pleased with the Garmin eTrex Legend HCX. |

The capabilities and size are impressive. They have packed a lot of functionality in a 5.5 oz package and made the display very readable. The text and resolution are great and the color enhances the display. The receiver quickly locks on and it seems to be a great receiver of the sattelite signals. This enhanced receiver alone makes it worth the purchase price. The "Enter/Rocker" key takes some getting use to, but quickly becomes an effective tool for controlling the unit. I give the human interface 5 stars. I used the included software to import my waypoints and routes from my Garmin 12Map. If you GO TO a waypoint, the Etrex continuously updates the vector between you and your destination which my 12Map didn't do. I also own a Nuvi 360 for driving use and recommend it if you plan on using a gps only for driving. The 360 is useless for hiking or any off road activity and that's why I bought the Etrex. The Etrex display is small and could distract a driver. I recommend inputing your destination before driving and set the unit to display what you want then only observe the map display while driving. I was dissapointed on the limited included map which is far inferior to the included map on the GPS 12Map. If you are going to use the Etrex in a car or bicycle, you need to buy the appropriate map software and buy an SD card. With these additions the unit becomes 5 star. |

| Garmin is Great (5/5) | Aug 3, 2007 | Steve Woods | Duarte California US | |
| I have just received my very first gps via FedEx yesterday. My purchase was the Garmin Legend Hcx. The size and capabilities of this unit are amazing. With only one day of getting familiar with the unit, I am comfortable holding and operating it with one hand. The color screen is highly visible and the enhanced satelite reception provides good signal in and around large buildings. The preloaded map is basic and would be nice if it offered more detail, but having the option to customize the unit with specific software is great. I plan on using the gps in my car and motorcycle, but also would like to see how it could work for basic routing when I go flying. This is a great product, I can't wait to really put it to use. | ||||

Wow, what an amazing unit this is. I have been using an eTrex Legend for about two years and decided it was time for an upgrade. I have been researching Garmin's products since January and finally decided on the eTrex Legend HCx, which I received yesterday. I have used many of Garmin's products including the new Nuvi series, the zumo series, the GPS60C, and a few different eTrex's. It has many of the features the high dollars ones have, but without the cost. For example, the auto routing and re-routing works great. Keep in mind that you will need Garmin's cartography software or microSD cards to really make this feature come alive. I love the screen, as it is very easy to read day or night. It is easy to navigate through the menus and screens, even with one hand. The high sensitivity receiver is amazing, much better than the other eTrex models. I have been able to see my tracks in as I walk though my house; pretty amazing! It also locks in almost immediately. Two other things I noticed that were a plus: The “joystick” is much faster and more responsive than my older eTrex Legend. Second is the USB connectivity is much better than in the past, especially comparing to the older serial connections. It transfers maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks in seconds. One of the questions I never could find a good answer for was, How much storage do I need? Here's what I found out after getting this unit. I can fit about three or four states on my 64MB microSd card from City Navigator software V8. I think that you would need about 2GB to fit the whole US. Basically this unit is a great purchase for someone that is looking for one unit that does a little of everything. It packs a pretty good punch for the cost and size. I highly recommend it. |

| This unit does everything I wanted and more! Easy to read, accurate, customisable and easy to navigate - Santa couldn't have chosen better. Geocaching has been so much more rewarding since - I can even put abbreviated hints in this unit! | ||||
