After two years of using the Garmin GPSmap 76 it was time to update to the GPSmap 76Cx. It was getting harder to read the display of the GPSmap 76 especially in the map screen setting and frustration with the lost satellite reception in heavy cover. I really liked the older model and felt that the newer model offered so much more. Picking up and using the GPSmap 76Cx for the first time was no problem since both units function in similar ways. A big difference is the display screens now use icons in place of the list of operations like on the older model. Moving through the screens is a lot easier and allows for quicker recall of information. The speed at which satellite capture is made is remarkable compared to the old 76! Even inside the house satellites were locked on. No more lost satellites in the heavy canopy of trees when geocaching. Geocachers will appreciate the icon just for geocaching waypoints. Waypoints added with a geocache symbol are automatically placed in the separate geocaching icon location. The automatic route calculation will be nice when traveling but even nicer going from cache to cache. The almost unlimited memory of the new 76Cx will be very handy when uploading map data. The slightly smaller screen would only be notice by someone who upgraded but the color display will make up for it by being easier to read. The old GPSmap 76 will still find use on the sailboat as a tactical tool when racing and the new 76Cx will be fill the function of an upgraded navigator.
