Wow, what an amazing unit this is. I have been using an eTrex Legend for about two years and decided it was time for an upgrade. I have been researching Garmin's products since January and finally decided on the eTrex Legend HCx, which I received yesterday. I have used many of Garmin's products including the new Nuvi series, the zumo series, the GPS60C, and a few different eTrex's. It has many of the features the high dollars ones have, but without the cost. For example, the auto routing and re-routing works great. Keep in mind that you will need Garmin's cartography software or microSD cards to really make this feature come alive. I love the screen, as it is very easy to read day or night. It is easy to navigate through the menus and screens, even with one hand. The high sensitivity receiver is amazing, much better than the other eTrex models. I have been able to see my tracks in as I walk though my house; pretty amazing! It also locks in almost immediately. Two other things I noticed that were a plus: The “joystick” is much faster and more responsive than my older eTrex Legend. Second is the USB connectivity is much better than in the past, especially comparing to the older serial connections. It transfers maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks in seconds. One of the questions I never could find a good answer for was, How much storage do I need? Here's what I found out after getting this unit. I can fit about three or four states on my 64MB microSd card from City Navigator software V8. I think that you would need about 2GB to fit the whole US. Basically this unit is a great purchase for someone that is looking for one unit that does a little of everything. It packs a pretty good punch for the cost and size. I highly recommend it. |
