The Garmin Rino 120 is state-of-the-art GPS navigation and two-way
communications combined, with enough memory to download detailed mapping
for driving, hiking, hunting, fishing—or just about anything else you
can dream up.
It's waterproof and can "beam" your exact location to another
Rino user up to a two-mile range (on the FRS spectrum) using "Position
Reporting". The radio functionality of the Rino 120 provides
two-way communications for up to two miles (using FRS channels), and you
can talk to friends or family who own conventional FRS radios. There's
also a voice scrambler and a vibration mode for silent calls.
The Rino 120 has a built-in
basemap consisting of American road and highway detail, along with 8
MB of internal memory for downloading additional road, street, and
points-of-interest data from MapSource MetroGuide, Topo,
or BlueChart CD-ROMs. The 9-pin serial port
PC-interface cable also comes with the Rino 120.
The Garmin Rino 120 combines a 2-way radio and GPS with detailed
mapping. It's rugged enough for any outdoor adventure, and it allows
you to send your location to another Rino user.
The
Garmin Rino's exclusive position reporting feature allows you to send and
receive GPS positions from other Rino® users so you can keep track of
your friends on skiing or camping trips, sporting events, and other
outdoor adventures.
Rinos transmit a user's position through the FRS spectrum.
Position information can be transmitted to any other Rino user within a
two-mile range.
The image to the right shows an example of four people keeping track of
each other's positions using a Rino 110.
How Garmin Rino Position Reporting works
Position reporting can be activated using either the "call"
or "talk" keys. When the "call" key is released, it
activates the Position Reporting function, sending your current GPS
location to other Rinos.

When the call is received by another Rino, the New Contact page
is displayed showing the ID, direction, and distance of the sender. The
sender's position is also displayed on the receiving unit's map page.
Locations are updated every second, and you can transmit your location to
others once every 10 seconds.
This could be a life-saving feature in an outdoor emergency —or it
could be used simply for rounding up the family at an amusement park or
outdoor resort.

MapSource™ CDs provide high level detail
of roads, recreational areas, coastlines, navaids, lakes, boat ramps,
topography and more. A 9-pin serial port PC Interface cable is enclosed
with each Rino 120 to allow you to download MapSource™ CD Data between
your PC and Rino 120. MapSource™ software also allows you to view
color maps on a personal computer, with zoom and pan functions for easy
map browsing. Users can then select individual maps in areas of interest
and transfer the maps to the Rino 120 or other compatible GPS.
Think of MapSource™ as an atlas that contains many
smaller maps. By choosing several of these maps, you can make a map
set. This map set can then be transferred to your compatible GARMIN
GPS, which allows you to tailor the map detail for the geographic areas
you wish to view. For instance, if you are planning a trip by car, your
map set might only need to include those maps that are along your intended
driving route. MapSource gives you the flexibility to choose the extent of
the mapping coverage.
Use the trip and waypoint manager functions to create
waypoints, routes, and tracks, and transfer them between your GARMIN GPS
and your PC. This is excellent for planning your next outdoor adventure,
business trip, vacation, or recreational outing without ever leaving your
house.
