The
MapSource Topo U.S. 2008 maps are similar to U.S. Geological
Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. Map names corresponding to
the 1:100,000 USGS maps used in the product. Topo U.S. 2008 offers many
major enhancements over the previous generation United States Topo
product. Topo U.S. 2008 allows the user to install the product in full to
their PC from a single DVD. This new Topo product is designed for
interactive viewing of detailed topographic maps and land
elevation contours with elevation
shading on the PC with purchase of the DVD (preprogrammed
microSD card maps cannot be loaded to a computer). This new Topo product
will also allow the user to view the elevation profile of routes on
the PC as well as on compatible GPS units (see Product Compatibility
drop down list toward upper right hand on Garmin's
webpage for compatible units). Topo U.S. 2008 is vector-based
and contains descriptive details for features typically found on
topographic maps. |

This new cartography will provide recreational
backpackers, hikers, geocachers and general outdoor enthusiasts with

DVD contains 6,633 mapsets, "average*" map size 0.6 MB,
3,995 MB total (US and Hawaii are 5,213 mapsets at 3,148
MB's; Alaska is 1,420 mapsets at 847 MB's)
*Individual map sizes can vary greatly from
"average" map size.
| This product is based on United States Geological
Survey topographic maps. USGS topographic maps are primarily
intended to show topography which rarely changes. The government
does not update them very often to show man made changes such as
buildings, streets, roads and trails - many USGS map sheets are
over 20 years old. |
For even more detailed maps consider instead MapSource US TOPO 24K
National Parks: West, Central or
East
which contain digital topographic maps for National Parks, that are
comparable to 1:24,000 scale paper charts provided by the USGS.

cost, Garmin uses a combination of government and private data sources.
Virtually all data sources contain incomplete or inaccurate data to some degree.
In addition, features are continually changing, so the data may not reflect the
latest modifications and/or additions.

Compatibility: The trip and
waypoint management functions of this product work with nearly all GARMIN GPS
units, excluding the GPS100 family and panel mount aviation units. See Garmin
MapSource Compatibility for units that support the map download
feature of this product. Some GPS units require a GARMIN data card to
upload map data (see Garmin
MapSource Compatibility).
